advertising!
because you won’t have a company or a salon backing you up… you’ll have to make some sacrifices and do extra work (free makeup sessions in your house, do makeup at fairs or conventions) but once your name floats around and people see that you’re good you can keep it as a profesion.

To become a freelance makeup artist without any training, you must develope a “following”: people who can attest to your expertise as a person who is knowledgeable and skilled in the art of makeup. Working with high school or college play productions might be an avenue for you to pursue. Volunteering your skills to Off-Broadway productions might be another way to establish yourself. Working for a reknowned makeup company such as Estee Lauder as a demonstrator in an established makeup department with Saks might provide many opportunities for you. Adrien Arpel began her career as a demonstrator, and has established a multi-million dollar corporation with her products.
Salesmanship, perserverance, and a belief in ones’ self is paramount to becoming successful as a freelance makeup artist, writer, reporter, motivational speaker, etc. Those who are motivated can succeed.

I am not sure about having the title “makeup artist”.. but a “beauty adviser” is different. You can become an AVON sales rep (and then you get a discount on all of the makeup that you use from AVON and mark), start beauty parties and offer makeovers to your guests. From there, you can build a client base and grow. Offer makeovers to everyone and soon the word of mouth will spread! It only costs $10 to start selling AVON, and then you are backed up with that professional name. If you are interested, send me an email at HoustonAVON@gmail.com and I can discuss this more on a one on one basis with you! Good luck, and keep up the great work making this world a little more beautiful!
