hi there leandra!
i started my makeup career by just always making sure my own makeup was immaculate. pretty soon other people were asking me to do their makeup; and soon after that a friend put on a fashion show and asked me to do makeup for the entire group. after doing that for two years without a certificate, i studied at a makeup school for a year and got my cert iv. generally when you do a certificate, you are asked to do “work experience”, where you will be put in touch with students doing short films, amateur models getting photos done etc.
if you dont want to get your cert. straight away but want to volunteer and get some on site experience; look up some drama groups or put up a couple of fliers in local high schools offering free makeup for formals / proms / socials, that kind of thing.
the makeup industry is all about making contacts, get your name out there!

I am currently studying Diploma Level 3 in theatrical and media make-up, so it would be a good thing to start a course and get yourself a mak-up qualification as it would look great on your CV.
A great way of starting out (especially as you have a qualification in beauty therapy) is to apply for a job as a make-up consultant on a counter in a department store. Some good counters to apply to are: NO7, Clarins, Estee Lauder, Max Factor, Clinique, Benefit, Too Faced, etc. This way, you will gain alot of experience and this will also look great on your CV.
Once you’ve gained some experience and knowledge on make-up you could also start to make a portfolio to support your CV (this way you will be alot more employable as a make-up artist if you have examples of your work to show the employer) You could offer yourself as TFP (time for print)
Hope this helps, Emma
